Schools and Parents: Partners for Healthy Kids

Itís a fact: Healthy kids equal better students. Protecting kids against infectious diseases such as the flu is a big part of that equation.

Our schools are doing their part. They help students learn age-appropriate health rules, such as regular hand-washing. Custodians clean our schools from front to back every day. School nurses ensure that our disease-prevention procedures are up to date. We separate, check and send home anyone who shows signs of illness at school.

Here are some things parents can do to protect their kids against infectious diseases:
  • Make sure they eat a balanced diet and get daily exercise.
  • Encourage regular hand-washing and discourage contact with sick people.
  • Keep a clean house.
  • Vaccinate kids against the flu.
  • Keep them home if they have a temperature of 100 or above, are vomiting, have a colored nasal discharge or have other flu-like symptoms.
Parents can find more tips for keeping kids healthy and fighting infections on the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Information about the Ebola virus, an infectious disease that has emerged as a concern this fall, is available from the Oregon Public Health Division and Jackson County Public Health Services. Our School Board policy on communicable disease is available on the District website.
By working together to prevent infectious diseases, parents and schools can provide A Place for Every Kid.
